I made this vid quickly so that people could see this amazing short, it really is brilliant.

It’s an AVI and the file size isn’t that small, plus I tried to fix the aspect ratio but it’s gone back to how it was. So I’ll try to sort that out probably at the weekend and upload a better version. But here it is for now:

More Barroom Philosophy with The Mighty Boosh

The Boosh boys invite us up to Julian’s local, The Island Queen in Angel, to talk riders, rock stars and Routemasters. Hair Of the Dog: Matt Cartmell.

Socialism: Chaps, I see you’re both on the coffee today. Would Vince and Howard be drinking something different?

Julian Barratt: What would happen is I’d get a cappuccino and I’d take the froth off and give it to Vince. And then I’d drink the black coffee. It’s technically known as a kiddycino – just the foam. Fucking awful.

Noel Fielding: It says a lot about our characters as well: dark black for Howard and light and frothy for Vince.

Where’s your local, Noel?

N: My local is the Pineapple in Kentish Town. I don’t go to pubs much but I do go to that one more than any other.

What would be your ideal rider?

N: Champagne. When we’re on tour we always have champagne.

J: We had a lot of smoothies as well, didn’t we? We tried to do a broccoli smoothie once and it stank the entire building out.

N: Broccoli and garlic. Julian and Dave had it and no one could go near them for about a week. It was powerful wasn’t it? He picked up a piano with one arm.

Who was the first rock star you’ve ever met?

N: Oh, my uncle and auntie live in Vancouver and they used to cut Slash’s hair and Bon Jovi’s hair and Motley Crue’s hair. And I think Sloth was in their shop when I was a little kid. I went ‘Alright’ and he went ‘Heyyy kid’. And he was all drugged out of his mind, big curly hair, top hat.

J: Louis Armstrong dribbled on my granddad. My granddad sat on his knee, and he played the trumpet and he remembers spit coming out of his trumpet onto his leg. And then Louis Armstrong’s spit went into my granddad’s genes…

N: … And that’s why you got into jazz!

J: That’s why.

N: God, that’s amazing. And when I was young, some of Slash’s hair that had been cut probably went through the hole in my trainer and I embodied rock. I embodied big-haired rock. Fucking hell, Sloth and Louis Armstrong.

Bono carries a silver marker pen with him at all times to sign autographs. Good or bad?

N: When we were on tour we were so used to doing signings every day that someone came up to me with a bit of paper and I signed it, and they weren’t even asking me to sign it. So presumptuous. I quite enjoy signings. We do a lot of drawings in our signings don’t we? Just to try and keep it from getting too monotonous.

J: We’re all trying to keep things moving and we’ll look around and Noel’s doing an oil painting for them. ‘Can you stand back a bit?’

What’s your favourite natural structure?

N: Maybe Box Hill. I used to go there a lot when I was a kid with school and stuff. I’m not even quite sure where it is any more. Kids can get up there. It’s got little rivers running through it. There’s a lot of bracken, I remember.

J: The Cow and Calf in Ilkley, just above Leeds. They’re two massive rocks that have been dumped by some glacier and you climb up to the top of them. I used to go there as a kid when I got intro drugs. We would drive up there and all come down from various things with this amazing view of Yorkshire. You think you don’t really come from anywhere, or I do a lot of the time. I go back there and you do get that sense of ‘I am from here’.

Favourite man-made structure?

N: I like the view of the Gherkin from my window. And you know the one next to it that looks like a robot – the Natwest building. They look amazing, they look really futuristic. There’s lots of glass and mirrors, and if you catch it at the right point in the day when the light’s on it, it just looks amazing – like a giant cock covered in mirrors protruding from London. It’s like a glitterball condom.

If you had a shop, would it be like Reggie Perrin’s Grot or Granny Takes a Trip?

N: I don’t need to answer that, do I? I’m wearing clothes bought from Granny Takes a Trip.

Does the demise of London traditions like the Routemaster and the New Piccadilly restaurant depress you?

N: Yeah, it’s terrible. I used to get the 38 all the time because I lived in Hackney. It’s an amazing bus. It’s beautiful. You sit on it and it makes you feel like you’re in a film in London. It makes you feel like London’s got an identity. I’m sure a lot of tourists love it as well. I did fall off the back of one of those once, pissed, and really cut my leg.

If you could remove one overrated band from history, what would it be?

N: Overrated band? Who do I really not get? The Grateful Dead. They are rubbish. Everyone loves them in America.

J: I’ve never really got them either.

N: No, really boring. U2 as well. I sort of understand why they were big in the beginning but I just think how can they be the biggest band in the world? Also, there was some good punk but there was also some shit punk as well. I mean, I can do without Sham 69. You know what I mean? I like The Clash and the Pistols and The Damned, but beyond that there were so many ropey old bands.

J: But it’s been marketed now hasn’t it? It’s Top Shop now. Appropriated and made into a look, a style that everyone wears.

N: Actually, don’t write that about punk, ’cause when I think about it most of my favourites bands are punk bands. So that sounds ridiculous.

Who, off the top of your head, are your favourite Londoners?

N: Firstly, Naboo the Enigma. He lives in Streatham. He’s a great Londoner because of his powerful lisp and his mastery of the dark arts. There’s no acting at all, it’s just pure charisma. He’s a DJ – he DJs all round London. Yeah, he’s getting good at it. He DJs under the name the Bronx Butchers. He’s a shaman who DJs, lisps and practises the dark arts around the Streatham and Brixton area.

Secondly, Bill Nighy. We always see him, don’t we Julian?

J: Yeah, in Kentish Town.

N: I see him in the Calendar a lot. Good Londoner. I think he’s been here for a while.

Thirdly, Keith Richards. He’s the king. He’s the king pirate. I went to see the Stones last night. It was incredible, but when he came to the mic, the whole place just erupted into a frenzy of madness. And he was scratching his Nicorette patch and smoking at the same time. And he had keys in his hair; keys and coins attached to his hair. What’s that about? He’s like a creature isn’t he? His hair is like smoke isn’t it? Like blue smoke with keys in it. He is a demon; he’s a sort of monster. He’s brilliant though, he’s made of wood.

Fourth would have to be Jack the Ripper – the imagery, not what he did. My doctor’s bag is purely inspired by Jack. Yeah, I mean the cobbles, the top hats…

J: …Small doctor’s bag, tight trousers… he pioneered the drainpipe, Jack the Ripper did. That’s why he’s our top Londoner, for drainpipes. And his stovepipe hat…

N:… And his surgical hammer.

J: Jars full of worms. They’re coming back in, aren’t they?

Fifth would have to be Tony Banks. He used to get stoned and he wasn’t afraid to say it. He was a good boy.
